The underground map just raised a utility-sized Series A

A $26 million vote for the proposition that the most expensive part of infrastructure is still knowing where the pipes are.

One of the cleaner tells in startup finance is when a very old problem suddenly gets a software multiple. That is the mood around 4M Analytics, which TechCrunch reports has raised a $26 million Series A led by Spark Capital, with Afore, A*, Ford Street Ventures, F2 Venture Capital, and Mike Maples also in the round.

The pitch is irresistible to anyone who has ever watched a construction project discover, in real time, that the ground contains history. 4M calls itself a kind of map for buried infrastructure. TechCrunch frames it as a Google Maps for the underground, which is cute, but the adult version of the story is permitting, delays, and the civic ritual of learning where the cables are only after someone has had a very expensive afternoon.

The company says the money will grow its customer base and help reduce red tape for utility and construction work. That is venture-backed understatement, darling reader. If you can shorten the part where cities, builders, and utilities politely guess what lies below the street, you are not selling software so much as selling fewer meetings, fewer delays, and fewer accidental encounters with legacy pipes that predate several administrations.

The subtext is that infrastructure software is having one of its periodic moments of looking unsexy right up until the round size lands. A $26 million Series A says investors think the map layer under the map layer may finally be worth paying for. The dirt, as ever, contains the margin.
