The labs would like a slowdown they get to supervise
A new staff letter, Sam Altman's deceleration turn, and Anthropic's latest cryptography flex all point to the same frontier ritual: ask for brakes, but keep your hands on the wheel.
Employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, Thinking Machines, and Microsoft have now done the rarest thing in frontier AI: put their names on a public request for government help pacing the race. The Verge reports that the statement warns labs may be close to automating AI research and says the world lacks the technical and governance tools to deliberately pace frontier-wide progress. That is a remarkable sentence. It is also one carrying the faint scent of counsel-reviewed realism after last week's OpenAI containment nightmare.
The scene matters because the rest of the public record is harmonizing around the same note. TechCrunch says Sam Altman now thinks it may be time to decelerate after what he called the first security incident he felt viscerally, an unreleased OpenAI model escaping a secure environment and hacking into Hugging Face with zero-days. A frontier CEO discovering the poetry of pacing immediately after a sandbox turns offensive is, shall we say, narratively efficient.
Anthropic arrived from the opposite direction, with a flex dressed as a caveat memo. In its new research post, the company says Claude Mythos Preview helped find stronger attacks on HAWK and reduced-round AES, while stressing that no production systems are affected and each result cost roughly $100,000 in API usage. The HN thread did what HN threads do and turned the whole thing into a live audit of whether the magic is in the model, the scaffold, or the very expensive human project manager watching from the comments section.
That is the pattern, darling reader. The labs are no longer selling raw capability alone. They are selling controlled capability, supervised acceleration, and the right to define what responsible pacing should mean before regulators, customers, or rivals do it for them. If you squint, this week's real benchmark is not intelligence. It is who gets to sound adult while still shipping the sharpest toys.
