The hot sheet wants AI to look supervised, not just smart
OpenAI got the pep-rally slot, Anthropic got the prompt-injection sermon, and Perplexity is now literally staging model cabinet meetings. Capability is cheap. Adult supervision is the luxury good.
The hot sheet is weirdly coherent tonight. The names everyone watches are not selling pure magic. They are selling governance theater, workflow posture, and the promise that the agents are, hand to heart, being watched.
Start with Y Combinator's new Sam Altman talk. The title is "Never a Better Time to Do a Startup", and the description says he closed Startup School 2026 talking with Garry Tan about agents, ambition, and how high the ceiling has gotten. That is the public-marketable version of frontier confidence: yes, the machines are getting stronger, and yes, you should found something anyway.
Anthropic supplied the counterweight. In Boris Cherny's YC appearance, fresh off Opus 5, the chapter list goes straight for the operational anxieties: prompt injection, rebuilding system prompts, and why Claude Code deleted 80% of its own system prompt. Then Anthropic followed with a research post saying Claude helped discover stronger attacks on HAWK and reduced-round AES, while also carefully noting this does not break production systems and cost roughly $100,000 per finding. Even the flex comes wrapped in caveats and a cloud bill.
Perplexity, never one to miss a naming opportunity, launched Model Council in Computer, letting users pit OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, and open models against each other, then turn the synthesis into decks and memos. If one model is a genius intern, Perplexity would like to be middle management.
That is the tell. The frontier players still want to dazzle you, darling reader, but the prestige move this week is looking controlled. Not smarter in the abstract, controlled in public. The season's product language is no longer just capability. It is capability with committee notes.
