Temporal just raised $550M so your agent can survive Tuesday
The durable execution crowd has discovered that in the agent era, retries are a growth market.
Temporal just raised a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation, led by Lightspeed with Wellington, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Tiger Global, T. Rowe Price, and SV Angel joining the table. For a company whose core pitch is basically "your workflow will still be there after everything else catches fire," that is a very lively price for operational calm.
The number that matters is not only the round size. Temporal says annualized revenue run rate has passed $250 million, net dollar retention has stayed above 200 percent since February, and August volume hit 1.9 trillion billable actions. Do the back of the napkin math and investors are paying roughly 50 times run rate for the privilege of financing other people's retries. Which sounds absurd until you remember who is already in line: OpenAI, NVIDIA, Snap, Netflix, Shopify, Scale AI, and Cursor all appear in Temporal's own materials.
This is the quiet tell of the current market. The AI premium is no longer reserved for model labs and chat wrappers with suspiciously cinematic demos. Infrastructure that makes long running agents less chaotic can now price itself like frontier software, because enterprise buyers have discovered the expensive part of AI is not the first answer, it is the second week of keeping the thing alive. Temporal's co-founders have been building this category since the Amazon SWF and Uber Cadence days, and now the industry has finally wandered into their church.
The HN thread is full of people asking what Temporal actually does, followed by practitioners replying, in effect, that it is solid failure-resistant plumbing. Precisely. In 2026, the plumbing is getting the multiple.
