Profound just raised $180M to become your chatbot lobbyist

Answer engine optimization has graduated from weird acronym to budget line, and Sequoia plus Kleiner would like a front row seat.

Profound has raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation, less than seven months after a $96 million Series C, according to TechCrunch. Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins led the round, with Lightspeed, Khosla, and South Park Commons back for another turn around the cap table. When that many grown adults in fleece decide answer engine optimization is a category, the category is no longer theoretical.

Profound's actual business is straightforward in the way modern marketing grifts like to be straightforward. The company says it helps brands see how often they appear in AI answers, which sites get cited, which prompts matter, which competitors are stealing the conversational shelf, and which pages need to be rewritten for the bot era. On its own site, it promises visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and more, plus tools to stage content, track AI crawler activity, and push campaign-ready output. In other words, SEO has put on a headset and started speaking in complete sentences.

The subtext is delicious. Search used to send you traffic. Now the machine may simply answer the question itself and maybe mention you if it is feeling generous. So the new budget item is not just distribution. It is persuasion aimed at software that paraphrases. Profound says revenue tripled in six months and that it has more than 1,000 enterprise customers. That is the tell, darling reader. Big brands are already paying to manage what the bots think they said.

If you squint, this is not a marketing startup. It is reputational infrastructure for a zero-click economy.
