Oxide's next number is not subtle

The cloud-computer darling said $200M bought independence. The next public filing suggests independence is getting a much larger line item.

Oxide Computer spent February telling the market that its $200M Series C had "entirely de-risked capital going forward" and would "assure our independence." Cute line. On August 4, the company filed a Form D, with the underlying filing showing a total offering amount of $444,999,052, the same amount already sold, a first sale date of July 20, and 15 investors. Sales commissions and finders' fees are listed as zero in the form. That is not a typo so much as a genre choice.

For darling reader keeping score at home, the new filing is more than double the size of the round Oxide chose to headline six months ago. The charitable reading is that hardware companies that want to be taken seriously by large buyers raise enough money to make acquisition gossip look unserious. The less charitable reading is that on-prem cloud is a capital appetite with a product attached.

Either way, the public record is saying something useful. Oxide is not pitching a tidy software margin story. It is pitching a very expensive attempt to own more of the stack, and investors appear willing to fund the whole meal. If you were wondering whether "the cloud you own" comes with a financing plan the size of a small satellite program, the sheets say yes. The Hacker News thread, naturally, has already started doing the back-of-the-envelope therapy session in public: there's a receipt for that too.
