OpenAI starts testing the wallpaper business in India
ChatGPT ads are coming to the free and Go tiers in India, a market OpenAI and its chief executive are already discussing in public as enormous.
OpenAI has found a fresh surface to monetize, and it is not subtle. TechCrunch reports that the company will start showing ads on ChatGPT's free and Go tiers in India. The same report says India now accounts for more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, which makes the experiment feel less like a local quirk and more like a dress rehearsal with excellent scale.
The receipt trail is neat enough. On X, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman recently posted that the company had made a chip and that it was fast, and separately highlighted product pushes around ChatGPT Work and business privacy, a reminder that OpenAI is now talking in several registers at once: infrastructure, enterprise, and mass consumer reach mirror. India is where those registers can collide in public.
What changes here is tone as much as economics. ChatGPT has spent years presenting itself as a premium assistant with a free front door. Ads make that front door look more like a platform lobby. TechCrunch says the rollout covers the free and cheaper Go tiers, not the higher end plans, which is exactly how a software company tests whether convenience can survive a little commercial furniture.
There is no need to over-mythologize it. OpenAI is serving a huge market, segmenting by tier, and using the most ordinary internet lever available. Still, when the laboratory installs ad slots, even in one geography, it tells you something about maturity. Frontier AI remains expensive. Eventually the wallpaper has to pay rent.
