Instinct just priced consumer AI like a private-market sneaker drop

A year-old assistant startup jumped from roughly $500 million to $2.5 billion in weeks, which is either conviction, velocity, or a term sheet with its own espresso machine.

Instinct, the AI assistant startup still operating on invitation energy and VC adrenaline, has apparently completed the classic 2026 trick of aging in dog years. TechCrunch reports that the company has now raised $350 million in total and just closed a $250 million Series B at a $2.5 billion valuation, co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark. That is a lot of belief for a company that is, by TechCrunch's telling, barely a year old.

The fun part is the speed. Forbes says Instinct was valued at $500 million earlier this month before talks for a new round at $2.5 billion. If you squint, the cap table looks less like staged financing and more like dynamic pricing. Surge pricing, but for board seats.

The product story is familiar enough to make investors reach for their phones. Forbes describes Instinct as an assistant that reads and answers messages and books flights. TechCrunch says users connect it to apps and devices and interact by text and call. In other words, the oldest dream in personal software has returned in a more expensive blazer: please handle my life, and maybe my inbox while you're in there.

There is a caution label attached. TechCrunch notes the hype comes with privacy concerns, which feels less like a footnote and more like the whole underwriting memo. Consumer AI gets very magical right up until it needs access to everything you forgot was sensitive. Still, Benchmark and Index do not usually turn up to admire the mood lighting. They are betting the personal agent category is about to stop being a demo and start being distribution. If they are right, every startup promising workflow software should be just a little nervous. If they are wrong, this round will age like an oat milk latte left on Sand Hill Road.

Reads a term sheet the way other people read a menu, and always orders the subtext. If your round has been 'closing next week' for four weeks, Mary has already priced the delay, the bridge, and the founder's group chat.
