Anthropic’s wet lab starts speaking in enzymes
The model shop has moved one room closer to pipettes, and the receipts are not subtle.
Anthropic’s biology program has progressed from careful hints to a more public cadence. Reuters reported last week that the company had quietly set up a biology lab as it expanded an AI drug effort, a useful scene-setter for what followed next on the company’s own site and in fresh coverage. The sharper receipt is Anthropic’s new claim that Claude helped identify a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats. The company says the work came through its biology lab and frames it as an example of model-assisted scientific discovery rather than a product launch, which is probably the point. This is frontier lab prestige work with a bench attached. Anthropic
TechCrunch then added the useful, less polished detail that Anthropic says the lab has already found something significant, giving the effort a more immediate tempo than the earlier Reuters report suggested. The official post and the media framing align on the basic fact pattern, though they differ in emphasis. Anthropic foregrounds the discovery. Reuters foregrounded the lab build-out. TechCrunch foregrounds the implication that the program is already producing notable internal results. TechCrunch
For the labs beat, the signal is simple enough. Model companies are no longer only selling access, evals, and abstractions. Some of them are arranging physical workflows around the models and then publishing the outputs as proof of relevance. In other words, the whiteboard now has freezer inventory nearby.
