Anthropic just hired the hall monitor and made it a product update

The company says METR now has employee-like access, plans to publish risk findings, and may whistleblow if needed. Hacker News immediately started grading the phrasing like it was a liability waiver with better branding.

Anthropic has posted the kind of safety announcement that lands with all the glamour of corporate plumbing and all the intrigue of a locked filing cabinet. In its update on independent evaluators, the company says it has started giving a team from METR "employee-like access" to its systems so the nonprofit can assess model risk and publish the results. Anthropic also says it is working with SecureBio, Accenture, and discussing similar arrangements with other groups including Hugging Face.

The real tea is not that Anthropic wants outside scrutiny. It is that the company is trying to operationalize it before somebody else operationalizes it for them. The post says evaluators need expertise, independence, deep access, and the freedom to publish. It also says Anthropic will let evaluators whistleblow if needed, while reserving the right to redact secrets from reports. That is not quite radical transparency. It is more like supervised transparency with a corporate badge printer nearby.

The Hacker News thread did what Hacker News does best and immediately fixated on the wording. Commenters zeroed in on "employee-like access" and "roughly on par" tooling, which are phrases that sound as if legal and safety were forced to share a Google Doc under deadline. Fair enough. If your whole thesis is independent scrutiny, the adjectives start doing suspicious amounts of governance work.

Still, there is a substantive shift here. Anthropic is publicly admitting that frontier-model oversight cannot rely on vibes, blog posts, and the occasional self-authored risk memo. Darling reader, this is the part where the labs discover that if you want the public to trust your homework, eventually you have to let someone else into the classroom. Speculation, clearly labeled: the next frontier-lab status symbol may be less benchmark chart and more which evaluator has the best parking pass.
